US Open Final Preview
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - A new Grand Slam champion will be crowned Saturday evening at the USTA National Tennis Center and for the third straight Slam, that new champion will hail from the country of Russia. Anastasia Myskina won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and weeks later, Maria Sharapova hoisted the Wimbledon trophy in triumph after two successful weeks at the All England Club.
Demonstrating the depth of top quality women's tennis players currently hailing from Russia, two more of the countries finest will battle it out for the US Open title.
No.6 seed Elena Dementieva and No.9 Svetlana Kuznetsova survived six matches over a 12 day period to advance to Saturday night's women's singles finale, held under the lights and the spotlight of New York at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Neither player had an easy walk into this final match, especially after both played three sets in the semifinals. Dementieva escaped a see-saw affair with No.8 Jennifer Capriati, while Kuznetsova put together a late third-set rally to overcome No.5 seed Lindsay Davenport.
This will be the third career meeting between Dementieva and Kuznetsova - with both prior meetings coming this year. Kuznetsova won a three-set match while in Tier I action earlier this year at Berlin, while Dementieva evened the score several weeks back, rallying from a one-set deficit to defeat Kuznetsova in Los Angeles.
"I know her very well," Dementieva said. "We play couple times before, which I play a couple weeks before. She's a very good player. She has a lot of power. Really not surprised that she beat Lindsay."
Dementieva could have experience on her side, after already played in a Grand Slam championship match. The Moscow native lost to Myskina in straight sets back in June in the Roland Garros final.
With that experience behind her, Dementieva isn't shy about expressing what a Grand Slam title would mean to her.
"Everything," Dementieva said. "That's what I'm dreaming, and that's what I'm working all these years for."
Kuznetsova also expressed how important a Grand Slam title would be for her at this point in her career, though at times she hasn't thought she could reach such a high level of play.
"It's really big for me," Kuznetsova said. "It's the most important thing for me, for people who are around me.
"You always have to believe that you can do this. But sometimes it's difficult because you see the level on the TV and it seems to be so high."

Poor Dementieva! They can say this is a great moment for the russian female tennis, but I´m sure she is not happy, she lost two GS finals!
