Changes on the Uruguayan squad
Luciano Sabbatini
The Uruguayan team are in confident mood for the
match against Brazil in the semifinals of Copa América 2004. After the demonstration of resilience and grit by Jorge Fossati¿s men against Paraguay, the blue Celeste will count on all their first-choice players.
The definite changes to the side include the return of defenders Joe Bizerra and Carlos Diogo, in place of Alejandro Lago and Gustavo Varela, the latter sent off against the Paraguayans. Another probable change will be the entrance of Diogo Perez in Cristian Rodriguez¿s position.<br> Uruguayan confidence is also based on the fact that the Brazilians won just one of the seven encounters between both teams with Carlos Alberto Parreira at the helm.
In the history of their match-ups, that produced memorable thrillers, like the one in the Copa Rio Branco, in 1932, and the World Cup final, in 1950, there were 71 fixtures, with 32 Brazilian wins to 21 Uruguayan and 18 draws.
In Copa América, there¿s parity. Uruguay and Brazil met 24 times, with 9 wins apiece and 6 ties. Uruguay scored more goals, 37 to 31. The last encounter took place on September 18th 1999, in Asunción, Paraguay, in the final of that Copa América, with Brazil taking top honors.

Uruguay defeat Paraguay and advance to the semis Rodolfo Rodrigues The surprise-package in the first phase of Copa
America, Paraguay were unable to repeat the form they displayed in the previous matches and were eliminated by Uruguay in the quarterfinals of Copa America. After opening the score, the Paraguayans allowed the Uruguayans to equalize and reverse the scoring, although they were playing with a man down since the 63rd minute. With the 3-1 win, in Tacna, Uruguay wait for the winner of the clash between Brazil and Mexico to know who they will meet in the semifinals of the competition.
In an exciting and even match, Uruguay tried to avoid leaving gaps behind for the Paraguayans, who are represented by their Under-23 team. Nevertheless, Jorge Fossati´s squad lacked attention in defence and allowed Paraguay to counter-attack with peril. On 13 minutes, Nelson Haedo created the first opportunity, striking near the far post of Viera´s goal. Two minutes on and Edgar Barreto took a free- kick and found Gamarra, who scored the opener. The Paraguayan defender rising unmarked in the 6-yard box to put his name on the scoresheet for the first time in the competition. With the lead, Carlos Jara¿s side reduced the pace and allowed Uruguay to press forward. With Diego Forlan on the left and Carlos Bueno on the right, Fossati´s men found gaps until they drew level. On 38 minutes, Dario Silva supplied the cross to Carlos Bueno, who was brought down by Gamarra inside the box for a penalty, awarded by Argentinean referee Hector Baldassi. Bueno himself stepped up and duly converted to score his third goal in the Copa America. Soon after, on 44 minutes, Diego Forlan squandered a chance in the 6-yard box striking weak, allowing Justo Villar to make the save. From the resulting corner-kick, Carlos Bueno nodded onto the crossbar, almost turning the game around.
In the second half, the match resumed with the same rhythm, as Uruguay took the initiative. However, the Paraguayans came closest to scoring. Cristaldo almost crashing home, on 52 minutes, from a free-kick. Then, on the hour, Haedo shot straight at the Uruguayan keeper from close range. On 63 minutes, Uruguay saw left-back Gustavo Varela sent- off for a violent challenge on Henao. With a man down, Fossati´s team carried on moving forward and found the clincher on the counter. After powering forward, Dario Silva was set up by Javier Delgado before blasting home. The ball taking a deflection on Edgar Barreto before finding Justo Villar´s left corner. Trailing, Paraguay pressed forward with all they had and created fine opportunities, but couldn´t beat keeper Sebastian Viera, voted the best player in the match. On 88 minutes, making the most of another counter-attack, opportunistic striker Dario Silva outpaced Julio Manzur to bag Uruguay´s third and secure his team in the semifinals of Copa America.

Victory in the penalty shootout secures Brazil in Rodolfo Rodrigues In a nail-biting match with two different halves, Brazil eliminated Uruguay after a penalty shootout to secure their spot in the final of Copa América. Trailing by one goal at halftime, the Brazilian squad drew level right after the break, through top scorer Adriano. During the shootout, keeper Julio Cesar denied Vicente Sanchez to help Brazil win 5-3 and stamp their passport to the final against Argentina on Sunday in the process.
Despite starting the game with a defensive system, Uruguay took the early initiative and created the first goal-scoring opportunities. With 5 minutes on the clock, Jorge Fossati´s team had struck twice at goal, earning four corner-kicks. In the opening minute, Dario Silva found himself face to face with Julio Cesar, who made a huge save. On 5 minutes, Brazil hit back on the counter. Kleberson finding Adriano, who unleashed a powerdriver. Uruguayan keeper parried his shot and Kleberson tried to capitalize on the rebound. Tense on the pitch, the Brazilian players couldn´t repeat the offensive football displayed in the quarterfinals, when they hammered Mexico. On 12 minutes, Uruguay almost broke the deadlock. After a Luisão blunder, who headed the ball poorly, Dario Silva pounced on the loose ball in the 6-year box with an empty net in front of him, but the striker managed to miss the easiest of chances, striking the ball onto the crossbar. Ten minutes later, the Celeste finally found the net. Javier Delgado with the set-play and Marcelo Sosa heading home, helped by keeper Julio Cesar´s howler. In the lead, the Uruguayans were all backs to the wall and started playing on the counter. Brazil took advantage to find their form. But they only managed to threaten Viera´s goal in the last minute, when Edu tried to lob the Uruguayan keeper.
After the break, Brazil returned a totally different outfit. With more determination, they piled pressure on Uruguay and leveled the scores early on. In the first minute, Luis Fabiano´s cross was tapped in by striker Adriano, who scored his sixth in this Copa América. A minute later, the same Adriano almost reversed the score with a shot near the far post. Inspirational Adriano tried his luck again, on 49 minutes, and came close. Brazil began to set the pace in the second half. On 55 minutes, Alex struck from the edge of the box, but was denied by Viera. Realizing that his team had lost momentum, coach Jorge Fossati replaced Carlos Bueno for Forlan. The match became more even, but less technical. Both sides stopped taking chances in attack and only attempted shot from long-range, like Marcelo Sosa, on 65 minutes; Adriano, on 77 minutes, and Javier Delgado, on 79 minutes. Brazil nearly clinched victory in the dying minute, when Julio Batista forced Viera to a difficult save. The match ended 1-all, bringing on the penalty shootout.
Brazil and Uruguay converted 3 spot-kicks each. On Uruguay´s fourth attempt, keeper Julio Cesar denied Vicente Sanchez, giving Brazil the edge. In Brazil´s last penalty-kick, Alex duly converted, guaranteeing Brazil´s place in the final of Copa América.

Uruguay win to take third in the Copa América Rodolfo Rodrigues The Uruguayan team beat Colombia 2-1 to take third in the Copa America Peru 2004. Vicente Sanchez scored the goal that sealed the Uruguayan victory on 80 minutes. The opener was scored by Fabian Estoyanoff. Fourth-placed Colombia pulled a goal back through Sergio Herrera, who converted a spot-kick.
The Uruguayans took to the field with a modified team in relation to the one which clashed with Brazil and the players ignored the high altitude of the city of Cusco (3,500m) to set the pace in the match. So, within 2 minutes, Fabian Estoyanoff made the most of a cross to open the account for Uruguay. Colombia didn¿t seem interested in earning third place and only Uruguay piled on the pressure. Just before the break, the game became more even with both sides creating opportunities.
The second half started the same way, with only the Uruguayans pressing forward, while Colombia attacked in timid fashion. In one of these attacking moves, John Viafara stormed into the box only to be fouled for a penalty. Sergio Herrera did the honors from the spot to equal the scores for Colombia. With a few players feeling weary due to the altitude of Cusco, both coaches made changes. With new blood, Uruguay went forward and scored a second with a fine lob by Vicente Sanchez. Trailing, Colombia tried to take the game to a penalty shootout, but it was too little too late and Uruguay secured third spot in the Copa America.
