Team Nominations Announced for Fed Cup Semifinals
Team nominations for next week's Fed Cup semifinal matchups were announced on Wednesday by the ITF. The World Group I semifinals, along with World Group I and II Playoffs will take place on July 9 and 10.
Three of the four current semifinalists at Wimbledon will be represented in Fed Cup action as Russia looks to continue its title defense while hosting the United States and 2003 Fed Cup champs France plays host to Spain.
The United States team will be anchored by world No.1 Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams, both of whom are in the semifinals this week at Wimbledon. They will be joined on the U.S. squad by doubles specialist Corina Morariu and Mashona Washington, who will be making her Fed Cup debut for the United States.
They will make their way to Moscow to face the defending champions, led by Elena Dementieva and Anastasia Myskina. The top 10-ranked duo will be joined by Dinara Safina ;D and Vera Douchevina.
In France, Amelie Mauresmo returns to Fed Cup action in an effort to return her country to the finals in September. Mauresmo, who plays Davenport in Thursday's semifinal round at the All England Club, will be joined by current Top 20 players Nathalie Dechy and Mary Pierce, along with Virginie Razzano on the squad.
Also looking for a return to the final round will be Spain, who is sending Nuria Llagostera Vives, Anabel Medina Garrigues, Arantxa Parra Santonja and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo to Aix en Provence to take on the Frenchwomen.
In the World Group I Playoffs, Switzerland will be taking on Austria, Kim Clijsters returns to Fed Cup action for Belgium as they host Argentina, Germany heads to Croatia and the Czech Republic plays host to Italy.
