Davis Cup World Group Quarterfinals Preview
SLOVAK REPUBLIC v NETHERLANDS The Slovak Republic will be hoping to repeat its shock first round win over defending champion Spain as Miloslav Mecir’s team takes on The Netherlands in the hope of reaching its first Davis Cup semifinal. Mecir welcomes the return of the Slovak Republic’s most successful Davis Cup player in Karol Kucera, who replaces Kamil Kapkovic in the only change to the side that defeated Spain back in March. Kucera was on the Slovak Republic team that made its first appearance in Davis Cup competition in 1994 and has played every year since, going 32-17 (26-10 in singles).
Tjerk Bogtstra’s Dutch team is hoping to advance to its first semifinal since 2001. The Netherlands defeated Switzerland 3-2 in Fribourg. This is The Netherlands’ third consecutive away tie, and its first ever meeting against the Slovak Republic.
AUSTRALIA v ARGENTINA John Fitzgerald’s Australian side will be hoping to avenge its 5-0 loss to Argentina in 2002 on clay as the two nations meet on grass at the Sydney International Tennis Centre. Following the retirement of Australia’s longest serving and most successful doubles player in Todd Woodbridge at Wimbledon, Fitzgerald has called upon Peter Luczak for a possible Davis Cup debut. Wimbledon semifinalist Lleyton Hewitt leads the team, with Wayne Arthurs and Chris Guccione – who reached the third round at the Stella Artois Championships – also in the side.
David Nalbandian and Guillermo Coria were in the Argentine side that defeated the Czech Republic in the first round, while captain Alberto Mancini has added Roland Garros finalist Mariano Puerta and Gaston Etlis to his team. Puerta has a 7-1 record since making his Davis Cup debut in 1999 and could make his first appearance since 2001.
This is the fourth meeting between the two nations since 1977, with Australia leading their head-to-head series 2-1.
RUSSIA v FRANCE In what is a repeat of the 2002 World Group final, Russia will be hoping to repeat its dramatic victory over the French when the two nations go head-to-head for the fifth time (tied 2-2) in Davis Cup competition. Mikhail Youzhny was the hero for Russia at the Palais Omnisports in Paris Bercy, coming back from two sets down to defeat Paul-Henri Mathieu in the fifth rubber to hand Russia its first – and so far only – Davis Cup. Youzhny, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, again lines up again against France, teaming up with Roland Garros semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko, Igor Andreev and Tiemuraz Gabashvili. Davydenko will be hoping to recover from his right wrist injury that forced him to retire from matches at Wimbledon and Gstaad.
Guy Forget’s French team is led by the experienced Arnaud Clement, with teenage star Richard Gasquet hoping to make his Davis Cup debut. The 19-year-old Gasquet, who reached the ATP Masters Series Hamburg final before capturing his first career title on the grass courts in Nottingham, has risen to No. 17 in the INDESIT ATP Entry Rankings after reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon. Mathieu, the hero for France in the 3-2 first round win over Sweden, also returns along with ‘s-Hertogenbosch finalist Michael Llodra.
CROATIA v ROMANIA Croatian captain Niki Pilic will be looking for his team to repeat its impressive victory over the United States in the first round as the giantkillers host Romania in Split. Ivan Ljubicic was the hero in Los Angeles, defeating Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick in the singles while teaming up with Mario Ancic to overcome Bob and Mike Bryan in the doubles. Ancic, who captured his first career ATP title in ‘s-Hertogenbosch before reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon, again lines up in the Croatian team, with 6’10” giant Ivo Karlovic – a finalist at Queen’s – and Sasa Tuksar.
Romanian captain Adrian Marcu will be hoping for a repeat of its 3-2 win over Croatia in the only previous Davis Cup meeting between the two in 1999. Andrei Pavel, Victor Hanescu and Gabriel Trifu also led Romania to its 3-2 victory over Belarus in the first round earlier this year.
