Well I arrived there at 7am and queued until they opened the grounds at 10am. I first went to the practise courts and saw Tommy Haas, Taylor Dent, Vince Spadea, Dinara Safina and Guillermo Canas. I stayed there until 10:50 and went over to court 11 to watch Maria Sanchez Lorenzo against Katie O'Brien. The score was 6-4 5-4 0-15 to Lorenzo when play started and there was only 4 points to watch but Katie should have won the 4 of them though. She was very very aggressive and Maria was really just trying to keep the ball in the court, which lead to Katie making the error! Katie looked gutted about it! She has a very good forehand like a lot of the Brits and I never knew Maria played double-handed off both sides!!! I think the pressure got to Katie because there were LOADS of photographers there!
After this disappointment I went back to the practise courts because there was only boring men’s matches on!! I saw Shinobu Asagoe, Maria Sharapova, Sebastian Grosjean, Jennifer Capriati, Greg Rusedski and many more with their hitting partner. Maggie Maleeva was hitting with Vera Zvonaerova, Fabiola Zuluaga was hitting with Paola Suarez and Jonas Bjorkman was with Thomas Johannson. I do have to say Zuluaga was poor! I saw Keothavong as well and she looked very confident!
As i was watching them warm up and getting autographs, I was keeping an eye on the scoreboard to see when Silvia Farina Elia was going to play and as soon as the match between Schuettler and Soderling looked like it was going to finish I went to court 13 to watch my chicken. The match started really well for her as the wind was getting stronger and stronger but her experiences really did show and Peng struggled especially on the shots when Silvia put slice on the ball and lost the first set 6-0. The second set was a little bit closer and the crowd were all cheering for Peng except me, another guy and Silvia's family! Silvia really looked good at the net with some superb volleys especially on the backhand and I wished she would go to the net a little bit more! At 4-4 second set she broke the Peng serve again and for them on there was only going to be one winner! After the match I found Silvia and asked for a photo with her and agreed!!! I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT!!
I was so happy now and decided to walk around the courts to see who was on. I went to watch Juan Carlos Ferrero against Koubek and on the next court Carlos Moya against Stepanek. Moya looked really good and I was impressed with him considering he is Spanish, where as Juan Carlos was struggling he was down a set and a break when it started to rain and play was stopped . As soon as the courts were covered the sun came out and play resumed. I got fed up with standing watching these matches and went back to court 13 to watch Shinobu Asagoe versus Lisa Raymond. As I was walking there I went past court 10 and saw Martinez playing Sequera and Martinez looked very poor and got angry with herself and the umpire for the few points I saw. Watch Conchita was Rennae Stubbs who was trying to keep a low profile but with my eyes I spotted her and asking for an autograph. On the next court were Wheeler & Perebiynis and Wheeler looked good serving and I was surprised when i found out she lost!!
Anyway back to Asagoe-Raymond. As I tried to get on to court they were playing so I had to wait until they changed ends so I check out court 11 until then! Zuluaga was playing Kremer and once again Zuluaga was rubbish, grass just isn't her surface but Kremer looked good and relieved to have won. I finally saw Shinobu and Lisa playing at 5-2 first set and it was a very good match! Both players can volley extremely well but during the first set Lisa was much better than Shinobu despite the majority of the crowd supporting the Japanese women. In the second set Shinobu hit some glorious passing shots and Lisa was struggling at the back of the court and tried to come in on every single backhand shot she hit! Both players were struggling with their serves due to the wind, so when Asagoe held her serve at 5-4 in the second set I thought it would go to third set and could see Mantilla had won on court 18 and knew Keothavong was on next so went there. There were no seats left so I had to watch from the top of the building on court 18. In the warm up Anne looked very good much better than Sharapova. In the first game Anne was 40-0 up on Sharapova serve and the crowd thought there was going to be an upset but Anne couldn’t take them! I tell you won think Anne can grunt as loud as Maria!! Anyway there is one think I wish Anne wouldn’t do as much is run around her backhand, here backhand is good and almost every time she did Sharapova would hit it down to the forehand side and Anne couldn’t reach it. At 4-5 Anne was about to serve and it started to rain and she looked at the umpire to stop but he made her carry on and she double faulted and once again complained but he still made them carry on, which deliberately took her time and he had to suspend the match. Once again as soon as the courts were covered the sun was back out and the delay was very short. Once Anne came out she dropped her serve and then in a flash the match was over! Anne tried to get the crowd going but they didn’t, they preferred just to clap and Anne didn’t like that! Sharapova was crushing her second serve.
After this disappointment the crowd left court 18 but I stayed to watch Lindsay Davenport against Brandi. Lindsay won 6-0 1-0 retirement. Lindsay was hitting the ball so well I think a fully fit Kristina couldn’t have stayed with her! Lindsay hit the ball so cleanly and with such perfection I think she could go far in this tournament. Her forehand especially was on fire!
Now after all my favourites had played I decided to walk around the courts, I saw Maleeva playing very good tennis against Craybas and could reach the forth round. I saw the second set tiebreak between Golovin and Jidkova where Golovin won the match, both players hit the ball very hard especially the Russian but can’t get the ball back into court as well as the 16 year old and lost the tiebreak and the match. I saw a bit of the Emily Webley-Smith match. I saw the score-line was 6-2 to Frazier and thought it would be over soon so went but when I cam back Emily had won the second set and was a break up in the third! There was a good crowd watching the match and cheering for her, which I think, made thinks worse for the young Brit. She hits the ball so hard and is also good at the net and as I it was early in the set I walked around the courts. I saw Tatiana Panova against Mashona Washington and Tatiana won. In my opinion she has put on a lot of weight! Mashona hits the ball sooooo hard but some how Panova kept the ball in court and after she won she was crying! As I was looking at the scoreboard on the centre court me and my dad decided to go and watch Sprem and Williams we arrived at 4-3 in the second set and the atmosphere was electric, with most of the crowd wanting Karolina to win. They both really wanted to win Karolina was superb from the back of the court and Venus had no answer to her. I was so please to be on centre court I didn’t notice the problem with the score. They both played great tennis and well done to Karolina whose groundstrokes are top class. The last match I saw was a doubles match on centre court between Ian Flanagan & Martin Lee against to Americans Phillips & Bowen. I only saw the first set of this match where the Americans won 6-3. Ian was the best player in my opinion with a great serve and an excellent forehand but Martin was the one in charge of all the decision!
