Four Players Locked in Wild Race for the Championships
Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Vera Zvonareva fighting during final week of the regular season to become last two qualifiers for season-ending WTA Tour Championships November 10-15 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles; Championships race considered one of the closest in recent history
Entering the last week of the WTA Tour regular season, four marquee players are waging a fierce battle for the final two spots in the prestigious WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche.
In one of the closest Championships races in recent history, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Vera Zvonareva are wrestling this week for the remaining two qualifying positions for the coveted season-ending event at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, November 10-15. The final two entrants will bring more star power to a Championships singles field that already includes Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova, World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, French Open winner Anastasia Myskina, former No. 1 Amélie Mauresmo and two-time Grand Slam finalist Elena Dementieva.
Entering this week, Serena is eighth (2,597 points) in the latest Porsche Race to the Championships standings, followed by Venus in ninth (2,332 points), Capriati in 10th (2,300 points) and Zvonareva in 11th (2,291 points). The ninth-placed finisher will qualify for the eight-player singles field this year because sixth-placed Justine Henin-Hardenne has withdrawn due to a continuing virus.
Venus, Capriati and Zvonareva are battling it out on the court at the Advanta Championships in Philadelphia, where their performances will determine whether they qualify. Serena, meanwhile, is idle this week but still has a good shot at making the elite singles field.
There are many scenarios that can determine which players qualify, but essentially Zvonareva must win the Advanta Championships title in order to have a shot at clinching a spot in L.A. Venus and Capriati likely will have to at least reach the final to ensure a place in the prestigious field. Meanwhile, Serena could easily qualify despite not playing this week because she leads Capriati by nearly 300 points.
The top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams in the final Porsche Race to the Championships standings qualify for the prestigious Championships. The Championships singles winner will earn $1 million in prize money and a Porsche to donate to their favorite charity.
