The shooting happened at the Islas Malvinas school in the town of Carmen de Patagones, some 800 kilometres south of Buenos Aires, police said. The boy, said to have been an introvert, took his father's 9 millimetre handgun into the class after a daily ceremony for the raising of the national flag, police said. He began shooting as students waited for a teacher to arrive, police and witnesses said. The boy's father had the weapon as a member of Argentina's border and river police. From Reuters: story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=18&u=/nm/20040928/ts_nm/crime_argentina_dcArgentine Teen Kills Three in School ShootingTue Sep 28, 2:06 PM ET Top Stories - Reuters BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - A shy 15-year-old Argentine killed three fellow students and wounded six on Tuesday in a school shooting that shocked Argentines unaccustomed to such violence. Reuters Photo The shooting took place in a middle-class neighborhood in Carmen de Patagones, a town 620 miles south of Buenos Aires and gateway to the remote Patagonia region. "Right after the flag was raised (to begin school), the boy went to the classroom and began shooting," Mario Oporto, director of education in Buenos Aires province, told local radio. Oporto said four teen-agers died in the attack, but a local police spokesman later said only three students had been killed. Two of the six students wounded were in critical condition, the spokesman added. The shooting was typical of the violence that has hit high schools in the United States but was a rare occurrence in Argentina and all of Latin America, radio and television commentary said. The teenager is the son of a coast guard officer and used a 9-mm pistol, Carmen de Patagones police chief Eduardo Diego said on television. "There was no kind of aggression nor verbal warning. The boy pulled the weapon out from under his clothes and began to shoot," Diego said. The teenager had no history of violence but officials said he was very shy and did not mix well with other students. "They were working with the boy to integrate him and help overcome the shyness that kept him from interacting well with his schoolmates," Oporto said.
