PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Leading astronomers approved historic new planet guidelines Thursday — downsizing Earth's neighborhood from nine principal heavenly bodies to eight by demoting distant Pluto.
After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is — and isn't — a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
I don´t know if you were aware of this, but astronomers made a meeting in Prague to decide "what is a planet" and the two possible wayswere would left us with a solar system of 12 planets or 8.
Because if we consider Pluto as a planet, asteroid Ceres had also to be considered as one because of it´s volume. And two objects outside Pluto´s orbit two.
I was somehow Pluto´s fan, but the true, if you see it´s orbit and it´s volume, it´s just a big asteroid from Kluiper´s belt (the second asteroid belt, outside Neptune´s orbit).
