PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Leading astronomers approved historic new planet guidelines Thursday — downsizing Earth's neighborhood from nine principal heavenly bodies to eight by demoting distant Pluto.
After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is — and isn't — a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
I don´t know if you were aware of this, but astronomers made a meeting in Prague to decide "what is a planet" and the two possible ways were would left us with a solar system of 12 planets or 8. Because if we consider Pluto as a planet, asteroid Ceres had also to be considered as one because of it´s volume. And two objects outside Pluto´s orbit two.
I was somehow Pluto´s fan, but the true, if you see it´s orbit and it´s volume, it´s just a big asteroid from Kluiper´s belt (the second asteroid belt, outside Neptune´s orbit).

Here you can see Pluto & Charon at the same scale than Earth and Moon.

Another Pluto and Charon photo (Plutón y Caronte in spanish). They are so close each other and the volume is so similar that it was sometimes considered as a double planet.

Pluto from Hubble Telescope. In the first pictures from Earth they were seen so close each other that it was supposed Pluto was a single body but not spherical, with a penaut shape.

I think it is sad
I was also a fan of Pluto - perhaps as it was the under-dog of our planets!
Where is this extra planet they had been talking about a few years ago. It was thought there was a planet "X" that was just a bit farther than Pluto... I havn't heard about that for a while

Astronomy is my passion, I wanted to be an astronomer when I was younger, but it´s still my hobby. I will put something about the two exo-Pluto planets they found in 2003 and 2005

It would be nice! Articles are too long to read sometimes when you don´t care 100% I was surprised by the title "degraded", perhaps you meant "demoted".

What does it means? Do we have 8 planets now??
