British hopes ended as Murray and Henman crash out
British interest at Wimbledon ended today as both Andrew Murray and Tim Henman were eliminated on a rowdy day on Centre Court. Henman opened play on the show courts against American Jan-Michael Gambill but despite taking the first set and receiving vociferous support from the 14,000 capacity, the eighth seed eventually succombed in four. A similar fate occured in second seed Murray's match as he fell to German serve and volleyer Boris Becker in the final match of the day. Whereas Henman put up a challenge in his match, Murray fell meekly, crushed in straight sets by an inspired Becker.
Although the home fans went home disappointed, there was still some excellent tennis played on day two of the championships. Sixth seed Roger Federer emerged victorious after over 3 hours of play against Argentine Gaston Gaudio who had ended Federer's Roland Garros campaign in the same round a month ago. This time the Swiss was able to claim the victory, albeit in five sets, to advance towards a second round meeting with Jarkko Nieminen who downed Thomas Enqvist in straight sets.
In a battle of qualifiers out on court two,Thomas Johansson recovered from two sets down to oust French left-handerMichael Llodra in five, recording his third straight five set win at this year's Wimbledon. Johansson will next face Henman's conquerer Gambill on Thursday, while Becker, the winner over Murray, will face qualifier Magnus Norman in round two after the Swede downed Albert Costa in straight sets.
The only other seed in action, Manuel Santana, playing his first grass event of the season, fell to Aussie Patrick Rafter in four sets and will next battle qualifier Vince Spadea after the American emerged triumphant over German Rainer Schuettler.
