Preview[/u] Seeds[/u] Thomas Muster (AUT) (1)World number 1 Thomas Muster comes into US Open in poor form, having won only one match since taking the title in Gstaad the week after Wimbledon. He has seen his dominance on clay threatened with the emergence of the likes of Rafael Nadal, Guillermo Coria and Mikhail Youzhny and he has been over-powered by the bigger hitters on the North American hardcourts. First round losses at Montreal and Cincinnati to Marat Safin and Rainer Schuettler respectively, two men who are not seen as anything special on the tour, points to Muster's run at Flushing Meadows being short-lived. Although his superb run on clay earlier this spring all but assured his place at the Year End Championships, he will be keen to do well here at the US Open to try and regain his faltering confidence. Verdict: With the way he's been playing, he'll be fortunate to win a few rounds. The world number 1 is primed for a first round exit. Andrew Murray (GBR) (2)Andrew Murray's year has been extremely consistant with his ranking being almost ever-present in the top 8. In fact, he has held onto the position of world number 2 since before Roland Garros and has backed this up with two Masters Series titles and one other runners-up position. As far as the US Open goes, his successes at Miami and, more recently, Montreal, indicate that the young Brit has what it takes to win the title here. In many people's eyes, he is the favourite to triumph at Flushing Meadows and with his recent form, it is hard to disagree with that. Verdict: In as good a form as anyone going into the tournament. Could do very very well. Manuel Santana (ESP) (3)His ranking may be third in the world, but Santana is anything but the third best player on hard courts. The Spaniard is undisputably one of the best players on clay and carpet, but he has never won a match on hard courts and will be the seeded player that the rest of the draw would love to draw. The fact that his ranking is so high despite his inability to play well on hard courts is a testament to his ability on other surfaces so for that reason, he has certainly earned his inflated seeding, but if anyone expects him to reach the later rounds or indeed win a match, they will in all probability be surprised. Verdict: Will perform much better in the indoor carpet season in a few months. Will almost definitely lose first round. Andre Agassi (USA) (4)Agassi finds himself seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time on the back of an excellent run on the North American hard courts, which has included successive finalist appearances at the Masters events in Montreal and Cincinnati. He will also experience the support of the home crowd in New York and will be rightly seen as one of the favourites for the crown. However, he is still without a title to his name on hard courts this year so question marks are raised over his ability to get over the hump and win the trophy here, but there is little doubt that he is one of the front-runners for this event. Verdict: Should reach the quarter finals at least if his recent form is anything to go by. Tim Henman (GBR) (5)Henman has been in and amongst the top 8 all season and has experienced steady results all year. He has claimed two titles this year, albeit both on clay, and made the semis of the hard court tournament in Dubai and the recent Masters event in Cincinnati, where he lost to Andre Agassi in three sets. Based on this solid form and his flamboyant serve and volley game, he could do very well at the US Open but, at the same time, he has only won one match at Grand Slam level this year. However, he is unlikely to trouble the true elite and will not be a favourite to win the titel, but a run through to the quarters or maybe the semis is not out of the question. Verdict: Should do better here than he did at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. An outside bet for the semi finals perhaps. Guillermo Coria (ARG) (6)Coria surprised a lot of people with his excellent play at Montreal recently, where he beat American favourite Pete Sampras en route to the semis, where he lost to Agassi. Due to this, he has rocketed up in many people's estimations and is seen as a worthy recipient of a seeding for the US Open. There is no doubting that Coria prefers slower surfaces, however, as his game is based on his incredible retrieving skills which are not as effective when the ball bounces through a lot quicker, so he is not seen as someone who is likely to win the title here at Flushing Meadows, but given a good draw he could make it all the way through to the quarters and perhaps the semis. Verdict: Quarters is well within his reach. Will probably be overwhelmed by the true big hitters though. Roger Federer (SUI) (7)Federer still hasn't rediscovered his form from earlier this year, which took him to titles in San Jose and Dubai, as well as a runner-up spot in Miami. However, he remains one of the best hard court players on his day, but with recent losses to Patrick Rafter and Magnus Norman on his supposed favourite surfaces will have done little to boost the Swiss's confidence going into the final Slam of the year. He is in real danger of dropping out of the top 8 if his form does not improve, which would be a shame for Federer as he has been in the Year End Championships qualifying positions for virtually the entire year. It is not impossible for Federer to win the title here as he has proven that he has the ability, but on recent form it does not look too promising for the former number 1. Verdict: Difficult to predict. He has what it takes to go all the way but doesn't seem to be playing well enough. Touch and go. Ivan Lendl (USA) (8)The Wimbledon champion has failed to replicate his awesome grass form on the hard courts, with a run to the Montreal quarters being his best result since taking the title in Newport the week after Wimbledon. With only one loss on grass all year, he is undoubtedly the best on that surface, but on hard courts it is another matter entirely. However, he certainly knows how to play on this surface and will have the support of the partisan home crowd, so he should be able to win a few rounds, but his heavy 6-2 6-2 defeat to Agassi a few weeks ago in Montreal shows that he has a long way to go to be seen as one of the favourites for the title here. Verdict: Quarters is likely. Anything better than this will depend on his draw. Unseeded Danger Men[/u] Andy Roddick (USA)Andy Roddick came from nowhere to qualify and then win the Cincinnati Masters, a result which immediately catapulted him into the limelight as one of the favourites for the US Open. A subsequent run through to the semis in New Haven a week later has shown that Roddick is in fine form and conditioning and will be looking good to do some damage at Flushing Meadows. Taylor Dent (USA)The big serving serve and volleyer has really improved his ranking since making the Wimbledon quarter finals, reaching his first final in Washington and then reaching the semis of Cincinnati, falling to the eventual champion Roddick. His all-power game makes him a big threat on the speedy New York surface and will aim to at least match his performance at Wimbledon. Pete Sampras (USA)The veteran American is another man who knows how to play on hard courts. With two titles on this surface this summer at Indianapolis and Washington, he will go into the US Open knowing he can take the crown. However, he failed to win a match at Montreal and Cincinnati and has only one win at a Grand Slam to his name this year, so will need to fight past his own poor form if he wants to make any waves in his home Slam.
