Hosts Germany Wins ARAG ATP World Team Championship Germany clinched its fourth ARAG ATP World Team Championship after coming from behind to defeat Argentina 2-1 at the Rochusclub. Tommy Haas and Alexander Waske clinched the winning point for the host nation in the decisive doubles, overcoming Guillermo Canas and Guillermo Coria in straight sets to spark wild celebrations among the packed crowd. Coria’s 6-1, 6-1 victory over Florian Mayer gave the two-time winners Argentina a 1-0 lead, before Haas responded with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win against Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio. Haas then teamed up with Waske against Coria and Canas to decide this year’s World Team Championship. Haas and Waske came into the final with a 2-1 record together this week, while Canas and Coria were playing together for the first time in their careers –the Argentines’ fourth different doubles pairing of the week. Backed by a vociferous Center Court crowd, it was the experience of Haas and Waske that paid dividends, as the Germans came through 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. It means Germany collected its fourth title in Duesseldorf and first for seven years, having previously been crowned champion in 1989, ‘94 and ‘98. Argentina was attempting to win its third title overall and second in three years (1980, 2002). In the opening match, Coria gave Argentina the perfect start, breaking Mayer in the opening game before taking the first set in just 20 minutes. Mayer, who proved to be Germany’s hero in the final match in the Blue Group as he came from a set and a 3-1 down before defeating Spain’s David Ferrer, failed to repeat his heroics against Coria, who was equally impressive in the second set, wrapping up his victory in 51 minutes. With Haas needing to win to keep Germany’s hopes of the title alive, he gave the packed Rochusclub crowd the start they needed as he led 3-0 in the first set. However, Gaudio broke back and took the next four games, as he served with a 4-3 lead. Haas, who was a member of Germany’s winning team in 1998, came back again, winning three consecutive games of his own to take the first set. After breaking the Argentine early in the second set, Haas completed his straight sets victory in 1 hour, 38 minutes to send the match into a crucial doubles. In the Round Robin stage, Germany topped the Blue Group with wins over the United States, Sweden and Spain, while Argentina finished first in the Red Group with victories over the Czech Republic, France and two-time defending champion Chile.
