Puerta Claims Third Title Sportmaroc.com
In the second all-Argentine final of 2005,
Mariano Puerta became the 21st Champion of the Grand Prix Hassan II after an impressive win over compatriot Juan Monaco.
This was the fourth all-countrymen final of the year after Buenos Aires, Costa do Sauipe (Rafael Nadal d. Alberto Martin) and Acapulco (Rafael Nadal d. Albert Montanes).
Puerta needed only one hour and 18 minutes to claim his third career title (Palermo-1998 & Bogota-2000) with the 6-4, 6-1 victory. He became the third Argentine since 1990 to claim the Grand Prix Hassan II trophy. On his way to the final Puerta defeated Tomas Behrend, Nicolas Almagro, Arnaud Clement and Filippo Volandri.
Juan Monaco, who saved two match points in his quarterfinals match against Gilles Simon, was playing in his first career final. The 21-year-old from Tandil was hoping on Sunday to record a first career win over compatriot Puerta, to whom he previously lost once in Viña del Mar, earlier this year.
Mariano Puerta collects 35 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race points and €44,100 while Juan Monaco picks up 24 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race points and €26,000.
Meanwhile, in doubles action, No. 2 seeds Frantisek Cermak and Leos Friedl claimed their seventh career title and third in 2005 (Buenos Aires and Costa do Sauipe) after defeating South Americans Luis Horna and Adrian Garcia with a 6-4, 6-3 result.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:Monaco: “I am a little bit disappointed about today. The conditions weren’t easy, it was windy and the crowd really affected me unfortunately.”
“I know it has been a great week for me, I gave everything I had in this final and Mariano [Puerta] played a great match, he was able to stay more concentrated than me.”
“My next tournaments are Barcelona, Munich, Rome and Hambourg.”
Puerta: “I am so happy. It is unbelievable, such a great feeling.”
“I was really nervous at the beginning because I wanted to win this final so badly. The conditions weren’t easy either, there was a lot of wind and the crowd affected us quite a bit.”
“I think my experience made me deal with the situation better that Juan [Monaco]. He is young; he was playing in his first final and he seemed to really lose his concentration with the crowd.”
Friedl: “ It was great to be in another final and win another title. We already won three titles on clay this year, and we are playing better and better together.”
“Our goal is to play every single match the best way we can. “
Cermak: “I feel great about this third title. It is always a very nice feeling when you win the tournament. “
“I hope we are going to continue our good form in the coming tournaments.”
“Our plan now is to play the European clay court season, we go next to Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Estoril and
finish at the French Open.”
