Sluiter Advances to Quarters; Verdasco, Robredo Also Through Fourth-seeded Tommy Robredo got past Guillermo Canas at the Ordina Open in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. Robredo reached the semifinals at 's-Hertogenbosch in 2001 and 2002.
Eighth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, in his first-ever appearance at 's-Hertogenbosch, took a 5-4 lead in the first set before Dutchman John van Lottum retired with a lower back injury after 34 minutes. Verdasco is through to the quarterfinals on grass for the second week in row, having lost in that round to eventual finalist Mardy Fish last week in Halle.
Michael Llodra, a wild card entrant, downed Jan Vacek 6-3, 6-4, to improve his match record to 10-3 on the season. Llodra is coming off a Grand Slam career-best Round of 16 showing at Roland Garros where he lost to Tim Henman in five sets. He also reached the doubles final with countryman Fabrice Santoro.
Dutchman Raemon Sluiter, a semifinalist here last year, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 win over qualifier Philipp Petzchner. Petzschner's nose began bleeding at 3-4 in the first set. After a medical timeout, he lost his rhythm and did not win another game in the 57-minute match.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Sluiter: "It was a good match, I even had a chance to break him earlier in the match but as soon as I got the break at 4-3 his level went down a little bit and I stepped up another gear. Then I got really comfortable."
"With every match you win you start to feel a lot better. Especially on grass a couple of wins can give you confidence and get you in the right way for Wimbledon."
About playing Llodra in the quarterfinals "It's going to be very tough. Michael is playing extremely well the last couple of weeks. He played great tennis in Paris, where he could even play the big attacking game on clay, so he will be doing that even better on grass. It will be an interesting match."
Verdasco: "I'm very happy, I played well but he also had some pain in his leg. But I felt much better on the court than on the day before yesterday. I'm so motivated, I think this is the most important thing to play well."
