Interview with Mariana Diaz Oliva
August 22nd 2007
1) Four titles in a row, 16 consecutive victories. That is a record, you are the player of the moment, how do you feel?
It feels amazing, it really does. I had won titles before, here and there, and I was already on my way to establishing myself as a force but this is just...well, as you know, it is just unprecedented. To dominate like this, to dominate everyone, it just amazing. I am a star back home in Argentina; autographs everywhere I go, my face on the front of every newspaper. I am just glad I am raising the profile of tennis in my home Country; that is something I have achieved off the court and for that I am so happy.
I would just like to thank God, he always believed in me, and of course my coach; I could not of done this without them.
2) Also, you did it amazing in doubles these weeks, with different partners.
Sure, that is amazing too. Three titles and a Semi-Final in four weeks. You can imagine how tired I am:lol:...it has really taken it out on me. I have to thanks all of my brilliant partners, especially Anne. We had great times on and off the court. My recent victory was the best though; beating Jane and Elena back-to-back in singles and then beating them as a team in doubles after they had bad-mouthed me was sweet revenge. I let my tennis do the talking and I guess it spoke volumes.
3) Do you feel favorite for Forrest Hills?
I don't know...I mean I would say I am the top grasscourt player right now. But some girls here will be waiting to pounce come Forrest Hills. I would have to say some of the Veterans are the favourites for Hills but I am certainly up there, I like my chances anyway, that is for sure.
4) After week 26 you were ranked 41° Now you are 28° and Ilkley points have not been added yet. What is your (ranking) task for 2007?
Ermm, I don't really look too much into the rankings. I am more interested in keeping my grasscourt and hardcourt streak alive, to be honest. Obviously it would be nice just to keep rising, that would be great. I think the clay and carpet tournaments are coming and I won't do well on those surfaces so if I could reach maybe the top 20 come the end of the year, that would be a big achievement.
5) You did a great job with Paola Suarez in FedCup, now you will play with Jorgelina Cravero, a newcommer almost unknown. Do you expect another great FedCup performance?
Yes, we did well. If they let us play in Argentina then we can win the whole thing:lol:...no, seriously, I think it depends on the surface and such but I will greatly miss Paola...we had such great camaraderie. Jorgelina has a real tough task filling Paola's shoes, but I am sure she is up to the challenge!
Thank you very much Mariana and good luck!
